Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. - (Phillipians 4:6) Do not be anxious about anything.
Really Paul? Anything? It's tough. It seems nearly impossible. But God's Word is established and valid for us today. In the original Greek, the term for anxious refers to a care that distracts and causes you to draw in different directions. Sounds pretty accurate, wouldn't you say? Part of the answer to coping with anxiety has to do with our conditioned response to it. We need to be careful what we believe and teach. Yes, Biblically speaking, love is a command. John 13:34 says, A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. However, it doesn't mean it's automatic. I can acknowledge that's it's a command all day but it doesn't mean my obedience is a given. I still have to decide to love. I still have the option of either loving or not loving. God will not force us to love Him, or others. He commands it, yes. He wants us to, yes. But He wants us to want to! He chooses to love us, not because we are lovable but because He is so loving. |
